Interview Tips

The interview is the most important part of the hiring process. It is critical for candidates to spend time with their recruiters to better understand how to prepare for their job interview. Hiring decisions are often made within the first 4 minutes of an interview!

Things to remember:
• People hire and accept emotionally first and justify logically later.
• People have to buy you before they buy from you.
• People are often sold by your conviction rather than your persuasion.
• Know your product, but think people.

ABOUT THE INTERVIEW
We will usually be able to inform you about what kind of format you interview will be. Whether it will be a series of one-on-one interviews, panel interview, or a combination and also who will be attending your interview.

You will learn what the potential employer is most likely to ask you. Practice your answers to these anticipated questions out loud to yourself before the interview.

YOUR QUESTIONS
It is a good practice for you to develop a list of 3 or 4 open ended questions that you would like answered, or that will show your interest and show off your research. These should be questions about the job, not questions about benefits or salary.

Such as:
• What are the primary duties and responsibilities of the position I am applying for?
• What are the short and long term goals set for the person in this position?

SALARY QUESTIONS
It is best not to bring up salary unless they ask you questions then you should answer. The final result often comes to personal chemistry and how well the interviewer likes you.

TAKE WITH YOU
• Copies of your resume
• Typed list of 3 business references

CLOSING
In all cases, if you want the job, pick an appropriate time and ask for the job. Only ask once and only directly to the hiring authority. Say something like, “I want this job, when can I start?” or “I am very interested in this position what is the next step”? Employers really expect to interview someone who is eager to join their team. They want you to want them just as much as you want the job.

Get all the names and addresses of the interviewers so that you can follow-up the interview with a thank-you.

Don’t forget to laugh when appropriate! An interview can be stressful, relax and try to enjoy getting to know someone new!
